TRANSPORTATION

Transportation and urban mobility are key to a growing metropolis like Miami. As more people pour into our city, we need infrastructure ensuring they can easily and affordably get around.

Car alternatives like public transit, along with bike- and pedestrian-friendly streets and ways, provide more opportunities for Miamians to connect and engage with each other. Continued investment in these and other transit solutions will help ease our congested roadways and shorten commute times.

We identified the three goals and metrics below as good targets for our success:

TRANSPORTATION GOAL

Goal: Miami-Dade is Pedestrian- and Bike-Friendly

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Walkable communities contribute to improved personal fitness and more frequent social interactions.

WHAT ELSE IS AFFECTED?

Home values in more walkable neighborhoods are typically higher than similar homes in less-walkable neighborhoods.

PEDESTRIAN FATALITY RATE PER 100K POPULATION

Physical safety is a crucial component in fostering pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods.
Miami-Dade has one of the higher rates of pedestrian fatalities among major metros. Fortunately, 2012 saw a sizeable improvement, as fatalities decreased to 58 from 77 in 2011.

% OF POPULATION WITHIN 1/2 MILE OF PARK

Parks are better utilized when they are close to where people live.
Nearly 75% of the City of Miami’s population is within 1/2 mile of a park. Miami trails more dense cities like San Francisco and New York, but is on par with San Diego.

% OF COMMUTERS THAT WALK TO WORK

Walking to work removes cars from the road and improves personal fitness.
A smaller percentage of workers walk to work in Miami-Dade than across the US and other major metros like San Diego and Chicago.

TRANSPORTATION GOAL

2-2

Goal: Miami-Dade Residents Have Access To and Use Public Transit

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Mobility choice provides transportation options for all residents, especially those without automobiles.

WHAT ELSE IS AFFECTED?

Greater availability of public transit increases access to jobs and the availability of workers to fill job openings.

AVERAGE TIME OF COMMUTE – CAR & TRANSIT

Residents are less likely to use transit if doing so substantially increases their commute times.
The average commute for transit riders in Miami-Dade County is nearly 65% longer compared to workers that drive alone to work. Among major cities, only Houston has a larger divergence in average commute. During the past several years, average commute times in Miami-Dade County have increased for both drivers and transit users.

TRANSIT SCORE/BIKE SCORE

Cities with successful mass transit systems offer residents cost-effective choices in transportation.
While Miami’s Transit Score is less than that of New York City and Chicago, the city has the 7th highest Transit Score in the US.

% OF COMMUTERS THAT USE PUBLIC TRANSIT

Public transit can play a critical role in facilitating work commutes
More Miami-Dade workers commute via public transit (bus, metro) than the average US commuter, but less than big metros with rail like New York and Chicago.

PER CAPITA TRANSIT OPERATING FUNDS
(ALL TRANSIT SYSTEMS, PER METRO POPULATION)

Efficient and reliable public transit systems require significant funding.
Miami appears to be funding its metro rail system adequately when compared to other car-centric metros like San Diego and Houston. But, our funding is 1/3 the levels seen in Seattle.

PER CAPITA RIDERSHIP
(UNLINKED PASSENGER TRIPS ACROSS ALL TRANSIT SYSTEMS PER METRO POPULATION)

Usage is an important indicator of a regional transit network’s health.
Ridership on Miami’s transit system remains relatively low, with some modest improvement in the last two years.

TRANSPORTATION GOAL

Goal: Miami-Dade Invests in an Efficient Roadway Network

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Inefficient road networks threaten the productivity of workers and companies alike.

WHAT ELSE IS AFFECTED?

Longer commute times are associated with greater levels of stress, anxiety, and social isolation.

Per Capita Transportation Expenditures

Local transportation spending can address critical needs unmet by state and federal expenditures.
In 2011, Miami-Dade County spent more than $148 million on roadways. Funding has increased $2.5 million since 2009

CONGESTION COST PER AUTO COMMUTER

Congestion is a waste of both time and money.
The cost of congestion in the Miami metro is on par with major metros such as Houston, but remains lower than the US average for large regions and dense metros like Chicago and New York. The average commuter in the metro loses 47 hours a year in traffic, for a total economic cost of $3.8 billion.

% OF AUTO COMMUTERS WITH TRAVEL TIMES OF MORE THAN 30 MINUTES

Long commute times result in decreased productivity and lower quality of life.
Nearly 50% of Miami-Dade residents spend 30 minutes or more in their car commuting each day, a higher percentage than the US and comparable metros like San Diego and Houston.
